After a thorough evaluation, our team determined that the home’s existing heating and cooling system—originally installed in 2006—was no longer operating safely or efficiently due to a cracked heat exchanger. We safely removed and disposed of the old equipment and installed a high-efficiency American Standard dual-fuel heating and cooling system, featuring a 97% efficient two-stage gas furnace and a variable-capacity air conditioner rated up to 18 SEER2. Handyside Plumbing, HVAC & Electrical resolved the issue by completing a full sewer line replacement and repair despite the lateral being at a significant depth, which required larger equipment. We pulled the necessary permits and coordinated PA One Call, then excavated and trenched from the home to the curb to access the damaged clay line. After safely exposing the pipe, we removed the failing section, bedded the trench with stone for stability, and installed new 4" PVC piping with two new cleanouts (one at the home and one at the curb) for easier future service. We also lined the section from the curb to the street, tested the system to confirm proper operation, and coordinated the township inspection. Once approved, we backfilled and restored the area, including replacing the concrete sidewalk.

Due to the safety risks identified, we recommended and completed a full electrical service upgrade to ensure the home was protected and up to current electrical code standards.

During our site visit, we upgraded the home from a 100-amp electrical service to a 200-amp overhead service, significantly increasing capacity and safety. This included the complete removal of the old electrical components and installation of a brand-new breaker panel, breakers, meter socket, service line, and weather head. All grounding and bonding were updated as required to meet code, and the point of attachment on the home was relocated to a safer, compliant location.

To further protect the home, we installed whole-home surge protection, safeguarding major appliances and electronics from electrical surges and power fluctuations. A temporary breaker solution was also installed to maintain safe operation during the transition.

Additional improvements included replacing the plywood backing behind the electrical panel, reinstalling a GFCI outlet below the panel, and clearly labeling all breakers for easier identification and future servicing.

We installed a new 50-gallon Rheem power-vent water heater, along with a new expansion tank, new shutoff valves on both the hot and cold water lines, and a mixing valve to ensure safe and consistent water temperatures throughout the home. The venting was also updated by replacing a section of the existing PVC venting to meet current installation standards.

During this visit, we also identified a dripping shutoff valve serving the dehumidifier. To prevent future issues, we proactively replaced it with a new angle stop valve and verified there were no leaks.

Our team then brushed each supply and return branch run and the main trunk lines to dislodge built up dust and debris for safe collection by the vacuum system. Afterward, we cleaned and sanitized all vent grilles and registers, cleaned the HVAC equipment, tested the system to confirm proper operation, and reviewed the completed work with the homeowner to support cleaner indoor air and help maintain efficient system performance.

Our team then installed the new Geo system, completed all necessary system connections, and ensured the equipment was properly set in place and operating as intended. After reviewing the breaker panel and outside service, it was recommended that the outside service wire and meter base be replaced. The breaker panel was in decent condition, but it needed to be rewired, and the plywood backing behind the panel also needed to be updated. After our work was completed, the home’s electricity was fully restored.

Handyside Plumbing, HVAC & Electrical provided a service call and maintenance visit after the customer reported that when they ran the cooling, the outdoor unit would not operate. Upon inspection, we identified two fault codes at the indoor unit and four fault codes at the outdoor unit. It was determined that the system was low on refrigerant. We provided a quote to recharge the system and recommended performing a leak search at a later date. The customer approved the work, and 4 pounds 6 ounces of R 410A refrigerant were added to the outdoor unit to achieve 7 to 9 degrees of subcooling. After completing the repair, the system was tested in both cooling and heating modes to confirm proper operation.
